When you have kids, you soon find that it isn’t as easy making time for dates with each other as it used to be. Even couples who pay for babysitters can spend their entire romantic evening either talking about what their son or daughter had done that day, or wondering what the child was doing at that moment!
It is great to chat to your partner about how your little one is growing and developing, but that can be done at any time. Try to make some quality time, just for the two of you by trying some of these date night ideas for exhausted parents.
Try these date night ideas that make the most of the time you have together as a couple – remember, it’s important to have time to yourselves!
Who said your date needed to be in the hours of darkness? During the day, you may be more awake and alert so you can actually enjoy each other’s company. So if you’re lucky enough to have someone look after the kids during the day, and you’re both not in work, why not do something together during the day? Then you can still get an early night, win win!
Do something together that you enjoyed doing when you first met. It could going to see a play, bowling, or going to hear your favourite band, or even just going for a few quiet drinks.. Doing an activity that’s a “blast from the past” can help you reconnect.
Try an activity the two of you have never done. Maybe that’s taking a cooking class, a dancing lesson or a visiting an art gallery. Doing something new forces you to connect in a new way.
Set up a babysitting cooperative
We swear by this one. If you have friends or neighbours who have kids around the same age as your own, and provided you all get along of course, take turns in babysitting each other’s children while the other couple goes on a date night. This will save the two of you a lot of money on babysitters, and kids will enjoy their little sleep over.
Date night at home
If you’re already tired from the day, forcing yourselves to go out for your date won’t let either of you actually enjoy it. So stay in, put the kids to bed, cook a meal, change out of your pjs (because you wouldn’t wear your jammies to a restaurant) and sit down and just enjoy each other’s company.
Top tip: Always pick the date of your date night in advance, and write in on the calender. That will give you both time to prepare and get excited about it. You’re both also more likely to make an effort for it – you wouldn’t cancel if it was dinner with friends, would you?
