Breastfeeding model on cover of Elle causes controversy

We’ve already seen some celeb mums pave the way for the ‘brelfie’ (breastfeeding selfie), but no matter how many times such images are posted proudly and ask for the respect they deserve, some people still seem to be a little old fashioned when it comes to women breastfeeding in public.

Nicole Trunfio, an Australian model and mum of one, recently suffered such negativity for her stunning Elle Australia magazine cover.

Trunfio, speaking on an episode of Good Morning America had this to say about the image and its message:

“I didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal. There’s nothing worse than, as a mother, doing something that’s so necessary like feeding your child and feeling like somebody could have an opinion about it or somebody’s looking at you the wrong way,” she said on the episode.

Nicole also posted the issue’s cover on her Instagram account, and expressed her wish for breastfeeding to be normalised:

“There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us #normalizebreastfeeding there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public.#weareonlyhuman” she wrote.

A troop of other celeb mums have proudly posted pictures of themselves while breastfeeding their babies, Alyssa Milano also sparked controversy with her ‘Brelfie’, but chose to ignore the negativity.

And actress Jaime King took to her Instagram to post a photo of herself breastfeeding her child, having this to say:

“These are the moments a mother lives for. Breastfeeding should not be taboo- and bottle feeding should not be judged- it’s ALL fun for the whole family:)”

It seems that the topic has a little more to go when it comes to changing people’s perspectives and opinions on breastfeeding in public, but we are in full support and of all mums trying to normalise breastfeeding with their powerful and beautiful images.

Elle Australia’s June issue is out now.
