Easy-to-make camping recipes

If we’re lucky enough to get the weather, camping can be a lot of fun for all the family. Setting up the tent, sleeping outdoors, telling stories by the fire, and best of all yummy camp-fire food. Take some inspiration from our favourite quick and easy camping recipes below.

The night before you leave, prepare some extra tasty butter: Mix it with chopped herbs and other flavours like garlic and rosemary; or basil and sundried tomatoes. Pack it in your cooler and spread on bread, add to grilled meats or use to finish sauces. Delicious.

Hot caramel malted milk

Warm up little hands around the camp-fire with a mug of creamy warm milk. This takes just two minutes and serves four.

All you need is 750ml whole milk and ½ of 97g can Nestlé Carnation Caramel.

In a saucepan, heat milk with caramel, whisk until smooth and heat until steaming. Spoon malted milk powder into 4 mugs and pour the hot caramel milk on top, stirring so you don’t get any lumps. Serve straight away.

Campfire Omelettes

Ingredients

12 eggs

salt & pepper

Butter or olive oil or cooking spray

Diced ham with Swiss cheese or

Salami and olives with feta cheese or

Roasted vegetables and goat cheese

Directions

Beat the eggs and milk with salt and pepper to taste until well combined. Pour enough for one omelette into a hot skillet with melted butter. Cook from 30 seconds to a minute until the bottom just begins to firm up. Add your choice of ingredients to one half of the egg mixture. Continue cooking another 30 seconds to a minute. Gently lift one side to overlap the other. Continue cooking until browned and eggs and ingredients are cooked through. Serve hot.

Camp-fire crispy potatoes (serves 4)

 Ingredients

4 large potatoes, scrubbed

olive oil

salt & pepper

4 cloves of garlic

Fresh thyme or other fresh herbs

Directions

Let the campfire or charcoal burn down to warm coals. Combine potatoes, olive oil, salt, pepper, thyme, and garlic. Toss. Make pouch with tinfoil and place the potato mixture in it. Seal it tightly. Set the pouch on the grill or in the coals. Grill potatoes until fork-tender, 35 to 60 minutes.

Dessert

And for dessert of course it’s the classic melted marshmallow, always an instant hit with the kiddies. The best marshmallows are roasted over hot coals rather than flames. Let the fire burn for an hour or two until a bed of red hot coals line the bottom of the fire.

For safety, buy roasting sticks. These are made from metal and have an insulated handle so you won’t burn your hands while cooking. Roasting sticks usually have two prongs to hold food items in place over the fire.
