You know Spring has definitely sprung when National Spring Cleaning week comes around again (hint it’s this week!). It’s a week where homemakers throw open windows, beat dust mites out of rugs and clear out their winter wardrobes (shudder).
It’s a time for casting out the old to make room for the new. Not only are we throwing out that yoga mat we never use, but we’re also getting rid of all the negative thoughts we’ve been harbouring over the winter months.
The lack of sunlight and bad weather can cause tempers to flare and doors to slam (it’s the draft!). But with the good weather comes more time outdoors, which helps the stresses of parenting melt away. Leaving us to focus on the good things, of which there are plenty!
Here are the spring cleaned parenting commandments
- Whenever I get frustrated with my child or feel that I am a horrible parent, I will remember that I am doing a great job!
- I promise to stop comparing my child and my parenting skills with those of (insert family member, friend, random acquaintance here) because I know that my family situation is unique.
- I will take a breath and slow down. Both in the number of activities I try to cram into a day, but also in my reactions to my child. I will do my best to think about what I am going to say before I say it.
- Instead of focusing on the things that go wrong, I am going to celebrate the best things about my child. I know that this type of positive reinforcement will bring about more of these great characteristics.
- I resolve to stop beating myself up emotionally for (insert whatever you feel most guilty about here) and to remember that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent.
- I will remember that love and education form the most solid foundation for life that I can provide for my child.
- I will think really hard about cleaning out the wardrobe. I will think really hard about it.
