5 steps to get your toddler to sleep in their own bed
Parenting is 24/7, 365 days a year… and sometimes it feels like even longer. So a good nights sleep is mega important. However, can you ever actually get a good sleep with a little munchin digging their knees into your back? It’s time to get them into their own bed to sleep and staying there till morning.
Communicate
Make sure your child understands your new expectations well before bedtime. Do not use the middle of the night as a time for negotiating. Set out your expectations well in advance.
Acknowledge your child’s fears and anxieties
Do not downplay how hard this might be for them, offer your support and understanding but remain firm on your rules. Think of things that can offer comfort during the transition like reading a book, or a brighter night light.
Extra comfort and attention during the day
If your child’s only connection or cuddling happens at bedtime, they will be less likely to want to give up that special time. So make some special time for them during the day, like cuddling up on the sofa.
Use a chart and offer rewards
Perhaps your child can earn a special outing or a new set of pj’s after a week of staying in their own bed.
Determine the right time to start
Make sure that the time you pick to start the transition, that your child’s life is completely stable and there are no other big changes happening in their lives. They are young and can deal with only so much change.
