We’ve put together 7 games to banish backseat boredom on any car trips. Whether you are travelling down the road or down the country here are some ideas to make your journey just that bit easier!
1. The Alphabet Game
This game can be played as a team game or with two single players. One team or player is on the right side of the car, and the other the left side. Start with the letter “A” and find that letter on a sign, truck, building or license plate through the window on your side. Say the word and then move on to the next letter. The first one to get to the letter “Z” is the winner!
2. Car travel bingo
Car bingo is a game that can keep everyone entertained for miles and miles. You can print car bingo sheets free on-line for road trips or you can even make your own at home. It is played like traditional bingo but with objects you are likely to see on your journey.
3. I Spy
Someone starts the game by choosing an object in the car or in their sight but does not tell anyone. The person only tells the colour of the object and says: I spy with my little eye something that is “red”. The other players start guessing objects that are red until the right object is named. Whoever guesses it correctly gets to choose the object for the next round of the game.
4. Window writing
Give your kids washable dry erase markers and a glove or mitten and they can draw and play games on the window. The best part is they can rub off their pictures with the glove and draw again and again! The glove can also easily be washed and no mess is left behind.
5. Group Storytime
One player starts off the story with a ‘Once upon a time..’. The next player adds their own couple of words and so on. The sillier the better! This one has the dual benefit of being both entertaining for the other passengers and also inspires a good laugh.
6. Car Colours
Everyone playing the game chooses the colour of any given car. Set a timer for 20 minutes and for every car you see of your chosen colour a point is rewarded. At the end of the 20 mins count up the points to see who the winner is.
7. Animal antics
In this game, the first person makes an animal sound while everyone else tries to guess which animal it is. Whoever guesses what animal it was gets to make the animal sound next. With younger kids, it works best to start out making the sounds yourself and having them guess. Once they get the hang of it let them try making the sounds for you to guess.
