Alone, But One Family

If you are pregnant without a partner to support you, it can be a daunting and sometimes lonely experience. But the main thing to remember is that you are not alone; you will never be alone again. You have a life growing inside you that is dependent on you and will be for many, many years to come.

If you are not sure of how you feel, or feel the situation is too daunting and you don’t know how best to cope with your news, there is lots of support out there for anybody who finds themselves in this situation. Whether you want to discuss your options, or need someone to talk to in a safe and confidential environment, there are plenty of free services available specifically to support and help those who need it. All the numbers and websites are available in our directory.

Once you have come to terms with being a single parent, the most important thing to do is to find a friend or family member that can support you throughout your pregnancy. Someone you can call to on the days you don’t feel so good. Someone who you can share those wonderful experiences of feeling your baby move for the first time; a reminder that you are not alone. A birth partner who will be more than happy to hold your hand while you experience the birth of your baby. Once you have people around you to support you, you will not feel that you are alone.

It’s a good idea to get involved with other single parents too. Check to see if there is a single parent community group in your local area. If not, join an internet community specifically for single parents. You may meet other single parent mums at antenatal appointments or have friends who are single parents, talk to them about any worries you may have and ask them how they dealt with being a one family. Remember, there are plenty of single parent families who have all coped perfectly fine and so will you!
