Overwhelming need for co-sleepers in Irish maternity hospitals

co-sleepers, maternity hospitals, co-sleepers in maternity hospital,

Sometimes someone comes up with an idea that’s so ingenious that you wonder why it wasn’t thought of years ago. That’s exactly what we thought when we saw this picture of a modern hospital bed with a clever clip-on bassinet that allow new mothers to take care of their babies easily without the assistance of hospital staff – especially if they have had a C-section or are bed-bound for some reason.

The beds are being trialled at Dutch hospital Gelderse Vellei, and are given to mums who are in hospital for 24 hours or more, such as those recovering from complications like high blood pressure, or who have had a C-section. Even better, the clip-on bassinet is set a little down from the bed level, so there is little danger of the mother rolling onto the baby – a common worry with co-sleeping.

We reckon that these bassinets should be in ALL hospitals to help mums care for their new babies easily and independently – it could even help improve our breastfeeding rates and take the pressure off our stretched medical teams in Irish maternity hospitals.
