A new wearable device that lets expectant mothers listen in on their developing baby’s heartbeat and movements continuously, rather than just when she goes into the hospital for a scan, is soon to be released in Ireland.

The device has a lightweight harness with sensor-laden straps that go over and around the bump. The makers of the belt say that they hope it’ll offer peace of mind to pregnant women. The belt, called Ritmo, is set to go on sale by the end of this year. The belt will be available from €70.

Ritmo belts also have a function of bonding with your baby, through the use of music.

Ritmo believes the audio belt will help develop your babies brain in the womb. The main external awareness for a baby in the womb is sound outside of the womb. A baby in the womb can recognize its mother’s voice, and can even distinguish it from other female voices.

A baby not only can recognize its mother’s voice, but it will even change its behaviour to elicit a mother’s voice. Research has shown that children recognize and prefer music they were exposed to in the womb for at least a year after they are born.
