5 great places to take your kids out cycling this summer maternity and infant family

Once your child has learned how to ride their bike, it can be hard to keep them off of it. They’re out as much as they can, and the only way to give them an even bigger rush is to go out on the bikes together as a family. But where can you go where everyone will be safe, preferably off-road and where mum and dad can have a restful glass of wine (or two) during a break from the sunshine?

Try one of these family cycle routes this summer and let us know which you liked!

Phoenix Park, Co Dublin

The Phoenix Park cycle path is a great one to enjoy with the kids. Head in an anticlockwise direction from the entrance and the slopes will be in your favour. Watch out for the deer roaming freely through the park!

Length/time: 9km (allow 2 hours)

Waterford Greenway, Co Waterford

Also known as the Deise Greenway, this brand new greenway was completed in 2015 and is enjoyed by thousands of walkers and cyclists every month. Running all the way from Dungarvan to Waterford city with lots of gorgeous cafés restaurants and pubs along the way, this is a great place for you and your family to enjoy a safe, off road cycle trip!

Length/time: 46km (choose a start and a stopping point to avoid being out all day!)

Lough Key Forest and activity Park, Co Roscommon

Kids love Lough Key Forest Park. But when you’re finished with the Boda Borg or Adventure Play Kingdom, there are 8km of trails to enjoy on two wheels. There are no steep hills, and you can choose from a short loop on the lakeshore or a longer one that heads into the woods.

Length/time: 8km (allow 1 hour)

The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny. Passing by some of the West coast’s most dramatic mountains and magnificent views of Clew Bay, this is a truly magnificent trip for all the family to enjoy. All off road with plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants along the way.

CurraghChase Forest Park, Co Limerick

The Glenisca Family Cycling Trail is a great introduction to cycling, or for little kids not used to great distances. Circling Glenisca Lough, you’ll pass huge old yew trees, cliff walls and a cave, so there’s plenty to keep interest levels up. Bear in mind there’s a €5 entry fee per car.
