One reason why your libido is low

Has your libido been slacking lately? Fear not, the answer could be as simple as you not getting enough sleep. A new study has found a direct relationship between how much sleep a person gets and their level of sexual desire or libido the next day.

Libido research

Researchers assessed the sleeping habits and levels of sexual desire among 171 women. The results showed:

  • Those who got more sleep on any given night tended to experience greater sexual desire the following day
  • Each additional hour of sleep a woman got increased her likelihood of sexual activity with her partner by 14 per cent
  • Women who got more sleep were more easily aroused than women who got less sleep

According to lead researcher, Dr David Kalmbach of the University of Michigan, the impact of sleep on sexual desire and arousal “has received little attention in the field”.
These findings suggest that insufficient sleep may lead to a decrease in libido for both women and men.

Good sleep not more sleep

“I think the take-home message should not be that more sleep is better, but that it is important to allow ourselves to obtain the sleep that our mind and body needs,” he commented.

And it’s not just women. Previous research found men with poor sleep patterns have significantly lower levels of testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone responsible for sex drive in both men and women.

Details of these findings are published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
