5 ways your kids can help with pancakes this weekend!

Pancakes are an art form, and lots of families have their secret recipes for the perfect pancake. What better way to spend this weekend than to teach your children the sacred art of pancake making? This way, they learn how to make you breakfast in bed and they get to enjoy helping out in the kitchen. It’s a win-win!

Sifting the flour

Allow them to use the sieve and gently sift the flour into your mixing bowl. Explain why you sieve the flour and why it’s important for there to be as much air in the mixture as possible; to keep those pancakes light and fluffy!

Note: Prepare for flour to go all over the place!

Cracking the egg

I think every child loves cracking eggs – it’s a great way for them to practice fine motor skills while also partaking in some lovely kitchen time with their parents! Show them how by gently tapping on the shell with a blunt knife, or by thumping it gently on the counter to crack the shell. Then break it over the mixing bowl.

Whisk the batter

Give them each a turn with the whisk and let them have at the mixture. Tell them to try and get every little bit of flour mixed in with the liquid so there are no pockets of flour. You’ll have a lovely smooth batter by the end of it!

Flipping the pancake

This would really be for older children who the parent trusts near the hob. Make sure you never leave a child alone near a hot stove, pan, or oil. Show your child how you check the edges of the pancake for browning first, and how all the bubbles on top should pop before you flip your pancake. Gently slide your spatula under the pancake, then flip keeping it as low to the pan as possible to avoid folding or collapsing!

Note: Pros can flip using the frying pan at this stage, but get everyone to stand well back!

And the best part – toppings!

Let them go crazy with toppings. Have a choice of sweet and savoury toppings to choose from! Some of our favourites are:

  • Ham and cheese
  • Cheese and tomato
  • Spinach and ricotta
  • Nutella and strawberries
  • Maple syrup and butter
  • Lemon and sugar
  • Berry compote and vanilla yogurt
  • Ice cream!

Don’t forget to share your pancake pics with us on Instagram!
