Make the most out of Black Friday

We might be the other side of the Atlantic, but that doesn’t mean we can’t cash in on the big deals come Black Friday. In fact, in recent years, Irish retailers and online stores have seized upon the Black Friday idea and turned it into a massive pre-Christmas promotional event that lasts well past the traditional single days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Certainly, we’re not complaining. There are some serious deals to be had out there, and if you’re in the market for something in particular, you can really pick up a bargain. But like anything, it’s important to keep your cool and remember a few key tips.

A bargain is only a bargain if you need it

Yes, that garden accessory is half price but do you really need it? Remember you’re only getting a good deal if you’re actually going to use the item. Think carefully about what you want and need and concentrate on getting those items.

Watch your security

If you’re buying online, make sure any payment is done in a secure site (look for the ‘lock’ symbol in the address bar. Be wary of following links from emails – instead, type the page yourself into the address bar if you can. Look for any small print or strange terms and conditions. Finally, be careful if something seems too good to be true – it probably is.

Compare prices

We’re always astounded how prices can differ so much from retailers sometimes – and we’re not only talking sales. It’s easy now to compare prices online, but ask if a certain store will do a price match too – you never know.

Watch your timing

Some shops release certain goods on certain days, and perhaps might even have a flash sale at a certain time. If there’s a store you’re particularly keen on purchasing from, sign up to their social media and keep an eye out for the bargains. Even better, set up an account in advance so you’ll be ready to buy when the time is right.

Go big…

The best bargains to be had are generally in the bigger items, especially electrical items. Take a look at some of the bigger electrical retailers for some real bargains this week. Other retailers to keep an eye on include Mothercare, Argos, Littlewoods Ireland, Debenhams, Smyths and Boots. And don’t forget the airlines – both Ryanair and Aer Lingus currently have Black Friday deals on their websites.
